The Return of the Orphan Works Legislation

Tuesday, July 14, 2015

Hi Everyone,

Last week I announced the new “Zenspirations® Create, Color, Pattern, Play” Facebook Group, and invited you to share your Zenspirations Creations. And what a great first week it’s been! We already have 121 members, and I have been both awed and inspired by the fabulous artwork that has been posted. Thank you to those who ‘live in color’ and have been sharing! If you are a Color & Creativity Enthusiast, please take a few minutes to check out the new group and  join the fun: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1471158256528576/
Part of what makes Zenspirations pages different from those found in other coloring books, is that they are designed as a springboard for your creativity… I’ve been fascinated by how different everyone’s designs are. Each one is impressive on it’s own… but collectively they are even more of a ‘WOW!”.

To celebrate a great first week for the new group, and to encourage those of you who may not have tried this yet, I’m sharing two designs that you can download, print out, and use to create a special piece. The first one is from one of the new books which will be out in October:

Here is a link to download the image: DOWNLOAD
For those who prefer pages without words, or who would prefer to add their own, I’m also posting my one of my favorite pages from Zenspirations® Abstract & Geometric Designs

Click here to download this design.  DOWNLOAD
To make it more fun, I think another contest is in order! You may download these two designs as many times as you want all week… and experiment with different tools, color palettes and embellishments. Feel free to add patterns, lettering, and additional illustrations as well as color, and then post the results in the FB group by Monday at noon EST to be entered into a random drawing for the “Live in Color” prize package. The package includes the three original Zenspirations Create, Color, Pattern, Play books:

and some goodies from my two favorite art supply companies– Sakura of America and Strathmore Fine Art Papers.

I can’t wait to see what you create!

Stay Zenspired,

Joanne

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to those of you who let me know that the links to the PDFs of the new coloring pages weren’t working yesterday; but they should be working now. Sorry for the inconvenience… and to make sure that everyone has enough time to create their designs, I’m going to extend the contest until Saturday, August 8th.

I look forward to seeing everyone’s wonderful work!

Stay Zenspired,

Joanne

  1. Yes and

it can look like Zenspirations® by Joanne Fink and something like enchanted or which says gave life to zenspirations instead of regular color decorate would be perfect.

    Thanks,
    –Sree

  2. I am so excited about your new books Joanne! They are absolutely yummy; so beautiful and vibrant!
Regarding your questions for giving credit:
Line 1, I would like to see this stay as you have it now. (I always like having the web page for an author at my fingertips)
    Line 2, I like #4, Color and creativity by…….

Regarding the copyright changes; I am shocked that they would even consider taking away some of the copyright protections! It is a constant battle, already, to keep work from being plagiarized. I will definitely write a letter today, so that it doesn't get put on the back-burner and forgotten. Are you planning to share this with groups like Ornation Creation? I also know several artists who create digital stamps and I think they would be very interested in sharing this information on their blogs. I will certainly be sharing this with my friends who are artists. Even if they aren't visual artists, I think they will want to take part in preventing this type of change and in support of fellow artists. Thank you so much for the head's up!
Best wishes and blessings on you!
    Mary Anne

  3. I like the first part of the phrase as it is… It also includes your webpage so people can easily find you.

    The 2nd part I like.. Color & creativity by….
    Or inspirational color by…..

Can't wait to see if my coloring made it into the book!

  6. Do you like the idea of giving a credit line for the person who colors the page?
    Yes

Here are a few options I'm considering:
For the first part of the phrase, would you prefer:
    1. ©Joanne Fink; https://www.zenspirations.com (which is what I use now)

For the second part of the phrase, would you prefer:
    4. Color & creativity by __________________________

  7. Do you like the idea of giving a credit line for the person who colors the page?
    Yes: [ √ ]
    No___
If you do, what would you like it to say?
[Just say colored by … and the persons name.]

Here are a few options I'm considering:
For the first part of the phrase, would you prefer:
    1. ©Joanne Fink; https://www.zenspirations.com (which is what I use now)
    2. Zenspirations® illustration by Joanne Fink; ← [ I like this one. Sound very professional ]
    3. Illustrator: Joanne Fink of Zenspirations®;
    4. Design by Joanne Fink/Zenspirations
    5. Something else:_________________________

For the second part of the phrase, would you prefer:
    1. Decorated by: ____________________
    2. Colored and enhanced by __________________________________
    3. Colorist: ________________________ ← [ I believe colorist is a good phrase to use ]
    4. Color & creativity by __________________________
    5. Something else: _____________________________

  8. No need in my opinion. Less is more, and more is less.

Love your work Joanne. Keep up the happy!

  9. Do you like the idea of giving a credit line for the person who colors the page?
    Yes___
    No___
If you do, what would you like it to say?
    _____________________________________________

For the first part of the phrase, I prefer:

    2. Zenspirations® illustration by Joanne Fink

For the second part of the phrase, I prefer:

    3. Colorist: ________________________

  10. I think it is great that you have almost completed the books and the covers look great!!

I also like the idea of adding a credit line to the page. I would choose the 2nd option for the first portion but would add your website at then end of the line after your name.

For the second portion I would choose Color and Creativity by.

Best of luck finishing up and can't wait to see your finished products and all the awesome pictures submitted by colorists all over the world!! 🙂

  11. I love the idea of more colour pages in the front of your books! I am learning, at the age of 64, the basics of colour, coloured pencils, paint etc etc and your clear and concise directions and illustrations are amazingly helpful. I would buy your book for that alone (I buy them because I love your illustrations too!)
    As to your questions:
Yes, I think it is important to credit the other person
    #2 sounds good to me
#3 gives all the information needed – short and sweet
Taken together they tell the whole story!
    Jakki

  12. Yes, As you do it now, and then #4 color and creativity by

I am looking forward to getting your new books. They will be awesome!

  13. Yes – #4 and #4 would be my choice. Looking forward to their release.

  14. Do you like the idea of giving a credit line for the person who colors the page?
    Yes please do give credit.

    My suggestions:

    1. ©Joanne Fink; https://www.zenspirations.com (I like having the website of authors easily accessed)

For the second part of the phrase:
    4. Color & creativity by __________________________

  15. Yes, definitely give credit for the person that colors the page – something simple like "Color by…….". For the first part of the phrase, #1 (you can never use your website too much) and #4 for the second part. Copyright laws will never be correct until they involve artist to help construct the language of the laws…..and that needs to happen soon!

Love your books and your videos are sooooo helpful – thanks for sharing your great work!

  16. Yes, I believe in giving credit and I think the credit line should read in the first part: Designed and Illustrated by Joanne Fink/Zenspirations; and the second part should read: Colorist with the person's name.
This is an exciting time and I can't wait to see the books in print. Good luck as you venture forward to completion of this project.
Also, I will definitely read your friend's blog and write my letter. Thank you for bringing this issue to the forefront for us. Without people like you, most of us would not be aware of issues like this. We appreciate all that you do for the industry and the hearts and souls of many. Thank you for sharing yourself and your creations with the rest of us in the world.

  17. Do you like the idea of giving a credit line for the person who colors the page? Yes

If you do, what would you like it to say? Zenspirations® illustration by Joanne Fink

For the second part of the phrase, would you prefer: Colorist:

  18. I say "Yes" to credit. As a quilter, I really appreciate when the piecer gives the quilting credit to me as I have worked very hard on her piece to make it beautiful, so to have my name on it is not just considerate but I think necessary.

I like #1, because the website allows me to find more of you.

    #2, just like the wording.

Can't wait to buy these books, my grandkids and I have a lot of fun with them and I gain great inspiration from you.

  19. Great to hear how you're doing & I love the idea of additional ideas for colouring & patterning.

    Great idea to credit colourist/decorator
Like what you have now for first part of phrase
how about Coloured/Decorated by ………. for the second part

    All the best
    Paula (PEP)

  20. Yes: [ √ ]
    No___
    1. ©Joanne Fink; https://www.zenspirations.com (which is what I use now)

If you do, what would you like it to say?
    5. Something else: Colored by ______________ ]

definitely keep what you're using now, it helps to find your website and shows that it's your copyrighted work. Thank You so much for sharing your visual works of beauty!

  21. Hi Joanne – I love your work and your books and I am looking forward to seeing the new ones!! thank you for all the inspiration!!!

Yes – to the question 'Do you like the idea of giving a credit line for the person who colors the page?'

For the first part of the phrase, would you prefer:
    1. ©Joanne Fink; https://www.zenspirations.com (which is what I use now) – always good to have a web reminder!!

For the second part of the phrase, would you prefer:
    2. Colored and enhanced by __________________________________

I look forward to being able to get the books in the UK> xxxx

  22. First question, "Yes."
For the individual who colored the piece, "Color Creation" by.. persons name
Second phrase,"Color & Design Creation" by.. persons name

I enjoy your books tremendously. They are good stress relievers. I practice drawing and coloring; I don't think about anything except my piece I am working on. Thank you.

  23. I like the signature you use now combined with #4 Color and creativity by … . Your work is so fine!

  24. Hi Joanne!

Here are my answers to your questions.

    1. Yes, please.
2.For the phrase choice, #2 for the first part with your website URL, and #2 for the second part.
I will also check out the blog about the Orphan Act.
    Thanks!

  25. 1) Yes
    2) I like what you use now with your web address
    3) Color & creativity by

I love your books and I'm looking forward to your new ones!

  26. I can't wait for the books to be available. I would vote for: 4. Design by… and 1: Decorated by…

    Keep up the wonderful work!

  27. Yes, 1 – I like having the website

They all sound good! But if I have to choose one, Color and Creativity by…………..

  28. #1. YES, COLORIST
    #2. OPTION NUMBER ONE
#3. COLORIST. This is a title we have all become so familiar with. Short and to the point

  29. Yes, I do like the idea of giving a credit line for the person who colors the page.

This is my choice: Zenspirations® illustration by Joanne Fink

For the second part of the phrase, I prefer:
    Colored and enhanced by __________________________________

    Thanks!

    Lora

  30. Do you like the idea of giving a credit line for the person who colors the page?
    Yes__x_

Here are a few options I'm considering:
For the first part of the phrase, would you prefer:

    2. Zenspirations® illustration by Joanne Fink;

For the second part of the phrase, would you prefer:

    4. Color & creativity by __________________________

  31. I like the way your name is listed on the books now… I have 3 of your books in front of me right now! But I would so love to win a copy of these!! But I would LOVE to see credit given where credit is due too! So, maybe u could go with the option to put the name of the person whom helped color on the page under their work… Just my opinion. Thanks again!

  32. I like number 2 & number 4. I like the word "creativity". I have an accounting brain so artistic creativity is extremely hard for me. I get great joy seeing the creativity of all the artists that submit their work. One day, I'll create something I consider submission worthy, but until then, I love seeing how different people put their own spin on the same artwork. Thanks Joanne for creating the artwork & thanks everybody else for sharing your interpretation!
